Thank you, Bryn Eglur

Thank you to 'The Welsh House' for our recent photoshoot at Bryn Eglur: rustic realism in rural Carmarthenshire.

The idyllic 18th Century traditional Welsh farmhouse, Bryn Eglur, framed the subtle beauty of Cosi Tabellini’s pewter pieces to perfection during our winter photoshoot. Bryn Eglur, meaning clear hill in Welsh, oozes the simple clarity that our handcrafted pewter also possesses, making for a wonderful marriage of meticulous recreation of time-honoured techniques and traditions, which, again, matches the ethos of Cosi Tabellini; reproducing classic designs in a classic material, with a modest, modern modification to suit both classic and contemporary settings.

The cosy and characterful interior, which can be said to be a modern twist on simple and honest craftsmanship – paralleling Cosi Tabellini’s modern take on ancient pewter – has been reverently, researched, restored and reinstated by owner Dorian Bowen.

Using a mixture of his professional expertise as a building surveyor, sensitivity to the locality being a local lad (Dorian was born in the vicinity), and team of family and friends to aid in what was a unique undertaking of epic proportions to resurrect, using traditional techniques and where possible the original or if not, locally sourced or reclaimed materials, Dorian has turned the traditional ‘tyddyn’ (small-holders cottage) into an authentic, habitable home, which, by the way, is a great deal more comfortable now, than it was back in the 1960s, when it was last occupied!

Bryn Eglur has been reborn as a unique space where contemporary comforts combine with classic craftsmanship, from traditional-style welsh blankets and stick back chairs (the latter rigorously researched and handcrafted by Dorian himself!) to the original iron range and flagstone floor. Cosi Tabellini’s classically crafted pewter, therefore, looked perfectly at home upon original Welsh dressers, antique woodwork and reclaimed slate window cills.

Dorian has painstakingly pored over every aspect, angle, feature and fabric of the cottage to retain its rustic charm, in all its simplicity and raw-hewned honesty, whilst at the same time cleverly recreating a place of comfort and character, for those who crave simple seclusion, with a nod to the modern age, in terms of hot water, underfloor heating, fridge and microwave. Be warned..! There is no TV, or WiFi to be found here, mobile reception is patchy at best, so it is a true get-away-from-it-all kind of place, in the beautiful Carmarthenshire countryside, but, there is a digital radio for those who must keep an ear-cocked towards the outside world… but, really, who would want to..? Instead, immerse yourself and escape…
