Breakfast in Bed…

Kisses from me...

To serve, or be served, breakfast in bed to mark Valentine’s Day must surely be the height of love and romance… (well, it is for me!).  The selfless act of getting up and out of a lovely cosy bed and face the cold reality of a late winter’s morning to rustle up a morning meal for the one you love is hard to beat.

Be it grungy young love on a budget; “Bring you comics in bed, Scrape the mould off the bread, And serve you french toast again” ( a la Sheryl Crow); or grown-up boiled eggs and a newspaper; or romantic gestures of croissants and roses, or exuberant examples of ‘we love Mummy’, with slathered slices of marmite or chocolate spread – sometimes on the same slice if you are really lucky… Whichever it is, receiving a tray of sustenance from a loved one on awakening is a special feeling! And is a gift that means so much, but is so easy to give on a lazy weekend morning…

Here are our favourite breakfast in bed ideas to treat the one your love…

Easy – French toast with Nutella and strawberries…
Quick, simple and inexpensive, uses up stale bread too!

Soak thick slices of old bread in a mixture of well-seasoned beaten eggs with milk (& optional cinnamon), then fry until browned and then left to cool very slightly before spread a generous layer of Nutella, and top with strawberries.

Healthy – Special Scrambled Eggs
Full of protein, and delicious – eggs are a traditional breakfast staple.

Heat the 1 tablespoon of butter in a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. When it begins to bubble and foam, add 4 trimmed stalks of asparagus and cook until just tender. Season with salt and pepper. Whisk 4 eggs with the milk. Season well with salt and pepper and add to the pan with the asparagus. Turn the heat down low and stir continuously until the eggs begin to form soft curds. Then, stir in 1/8 cup of crumbled goat cheese and remove from the heat. Finally gently fold in 2 oz of chopped smoked salmon.

Romantic – Heart-shaped Pancakes
Cute and easy…

Grease well a stainless steel heart-shaped cookie cutter and place on a buttered griddle. Pour pancake batter into it. When the tops starts to bubble, carefully remove the cookie cutter, flip over the pancake, and finish cooking. Then, dust with sugar, and serve butter and strawberry jam and strawberries…take a moment to cut V-shapes when removing the stem and slice to create hearts…
